Something I’ve been working on at my local theatre. The pantomime this year is Jack and the Beanstalk and this is a backcloth for the ‘Giant’s Kitchen’. The cloth was already painted but pretty old and some bits were pretty dark and shadowy; they basically asked me to go over the dull bits and make them look all nice and shiny and new.
Parts I had to go over include the beer barrel, the churn, the oven, the door, the freezer, the ‘spicy mustard’, the pot, and a whole lot of the stone work on either side and at the top. There’s actually a lot detail at the top as there’s a big shield design up there, but unfortunately the working lights I was using to paint by cast a shadow over that section! I’ll try and get a photo of the whole cloth at panto time so you can see what it looks like within the production.

More work from the theatre, this one is a flat of three bales of hay - I just started to paint before remembering to take a picture of it, which is why there are some much brighter sections on it!

jerseytigermoth:

The 2 parts of the windmill I painted - unfortunately I haven’t got a before picture for this one, but just imagine a really faded and dusty version of it! I had to completely remake the wheel as the original part had been damaged, which involved drawing it out and having it cut, then painting it. The wheel has since been attached to the top of the base and it will have a motor installed that makes it spin of its’ own accord.

jerseytigermoth:

This is the last piece of scenery I had to revamp while working at the theatre - a wishing well. It needed to be a bit more cheerful and obviously the broken and scratched bits needed to be painted over and covered. This is the well before I’d done anything to it.

jerseytigermoth:

This is the well after I had slapped a base coat of red paint on the little roof and finished the rim of the well completely. I brightened it up with a base coat of orange, then added yellow highlights and speckling, with darker orange for shadows and then two shades of brown to define the edges and cracks between the stones.

jerseytigermoth:

The well with the base fully completed.

jerseytigermoth:

The finished wishing well! I decided on a strong red for the roof with blue panels either side so that it co-ordinated better with the windmill I had painted before, since they were to be used in the same scene. I’m very happy with how this came out, I feel like it taught me quite a lot.
